FindingEducation’s On This Day Challenge
Teaches Students How to Research Online

Participants learn critical online research skills
while researching important events in history

August 18, 2010, Brooklyn, N.Y. FindingEducation (www.FindingEducation.com), a tool for educators to share Web resources and improve Web literacy, invites teachers and students to participate in its On This Day Challenge. Students will research an important historical event online, and organize their findings into an article that they will publish on findingEducation.

FindingEducation is a product from Dulcinea Media, whose mission is to provide free tools and content to help educators teach students how to use the Web. The company’s products also include findingDulcinea (www.FindingDulcinea.com) and SweetSearch (www.SweetSearch.com).

To help students learn and improve Web research skills, findingEducation offers guidance on how to find and evaluate information about an historical event on the Web. FindingEducation also offers instruction for organizing information into a well-written article about the event.

The Challenge addresses several issues commonly seen in studies of student Internet use: 1) students rely almost entirely on major search engines for their research and often review only the first few results they find; 2) students are unable to effectively evaluate Web sites for credibility and relevance; and 3) students, overwhelmed by the research process, struggle to make sense of, and put to use, the information they do find.

The On This Day Challenge offers teachers a chance for differentiated instruction among their students, while allowing everyone to participate in the same project. All students, regardless of background or learning style, can learn or improve their skills for finding, evaluating and compiling information from Web-based sources about historical events.

Throughout the school year, outstanding articles will be chosen for publication on findingDulcinea. Additionally, certain entries will be spotlighted on the findingEducation blog, and the authors of these entries will receive certificates of recognition and gift cards.

Participants will be eligible for $50 gift card drawings throughout the competition, and the most active participants will be entered in a year-end grand prize drawing for $500, payable to the school of the winning class.
