How to Cite a Source for an On This Day Article

You must cite your source in your On This Day article. Using quotes, facts or other material from a source without citing the source can be considered plagiarism. Learn more about plagiarism and how to avoid it in our guide to Plagiarism Prevention.

Below are examples using the style that is similar to the attribution style of findingDulcinea.com. Your teacher may assign you a different style to use when you cite or attribute, but your On This Day article must contain a “sources in this story” or similar section that lists the sources used.

Sources in this Story: List the sources you used to write your article. Aim to gather your research from at least three to eight different Web sources. List the name of the Web site, the name of the specific article or Web page that you used from the site and the page URL.

Sources in this Story examples:

  • AmericanTowns: The Seattle Public Library and MIT Present ‘Trash Track’ Exhibit
    http://www.americantowns.com/wa/seattle/news/the-seattle-public-library-and-mit-present-trash-track-exhibit-213648
  • New York Magazine: No Impact Man’s Colin Beavan on the Lessons of Living Unplugged
    http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2009/09/no_impact_mans_colin_beavan.html

Your teacher may have further instruction on how you cite your sources, and may require a more traditional bibliography instead of this section. Check with your teacher for more information.

In addition to the Sources in this Story section of your article, you will need to make sure that you attribute (name your sources) throughout the text. Whenever you present a piece of information gathered from one of your sources, you must list the source of that information.

Examples of attribution:

  • The 30-by-42-foot flag was larger than the standard flag because Armistead wanted a flag “so large that the British will have no difficulty in seeing it from a distance,” according to the Smithsonian Magazine. (Smithsonian Magazine)
  • An estimated 3,000 died or disappeared after Gen. Augusto Pinochet overthrew Chile’s democratically elected government. (The Times of London)
